Don’t I work from home to avoid that?

One of the most incredulous looks I get from people who know I work at home is the look I get when I mention that my son attends a daycare three times a week. Don’t you work from home to avoid that? Well, yes and no. The fact is that I work from home so I can spend more time with my son. But not every second of every day.

The fact of the matter is that my son is only in daycare for 3 hours for 3 days a week. But think of what you can get done if you dedicate 9 solid hours to nothing but working from home. Make those 9 hours work hours. Nothing else. No hair appointments, errands, or quick cups of coffee with the neighbors. You’d be surprised at what you can accomplish when you have dedicated time to work. Then you can arrange the rest of your time according to more "traditional" work at home schedules including when the kids are asleep, and during half-hour cartoon shows.

Don’t get sidetracked during your work day

While many of us are ‘home business workers’ so that we can maintain flexibility, that flexibility is often so much of a temptation that very little work can be done.

Hair appointments, grocery shopping, lunches out and the like can really cut into your work day.  Your distractions should be for really important things (like school involvement and family togetherness).

So, to keep yourself on track, minimize distractions and stay on task.  It’ll maximize your productivity AND ensure you get to quit on time everyday.

How can you make your home office more efficient?

It’s not easy, but making your home office less distraction-friendly is vital to your efficiency.  If you are blessed enough to have an environment that does not include frequent distractions, then you may not need to consider this, but if you are like me you probably do have to work in a stressful work zone.

The first step to creating a distraction-free zone is finding out what distracts you.  For me it’s my kids.  I’ve had to schedule out time when they can have my full attention and time when they cannot have my full attention.  I’ve also made preparation for those times well ahead of time.  They’ve got snacks, juice boxes, games and books laid out that entice them to stay in one area and lay low. 

I’ve also talked with them and stressed the importance of the office being a quiet place during my essential working hours.

You must do the same.  Assess your work schedule.  Assess your distractions and create a plan to deal with them as effectively as possible.

Making wise decisions

Being successful while working at home business owners requires successful planning and strategic thinking.

• Decision Hogs.  Don’t feel that you have to make all the decisions.  If you have a team or have trusted associates, then allow them to be part of the process.  Live and die by the team; it’s a great way to win!
• Low Standard Decision.  In the attempt to win at everthing, you could automatically pick the safe route in some situations.  Not to say it isn’t the right decision, but don’t chose it because it is safe.  Success requires risk and sacrifice.  Neither are optional.

Driving to a meeting this morning, I was greeted by an infomercial for the American Dream.  In this 90 seconds several real-life people in different walks of life were detailing how in just a short time their dreams have been realized by starting an At Home Business.
 
Although I think the commercial was selling a specific opportunity there are several ‘real’ benefits these people expressed about their home business.
 
Flexibility - Being able to be off when needed and spending time developing your goals instead of the dreams of others.
